Luna's Ongaku Go for May 2021!

Picking up after Ken with another month down from 2021, we at OTY would like our readers to know what was filling our ears for the past month. Each track is available across all digital music streaming platforms, with Apple Music featured on this site.

“Say Yes” by Nissy

“Say Yes” is Nissy’s latest single and from first listen, I fell in love with it. The composition fits perfectly with Nissy’s vocals and style. I love the versatility in the composition as you could dance to it in a club or take dance lessons to it as well. I feel that Nissy hits every point making “Say Yes” very memorable and a treat to listen to. The rap in it gives a nice touch showing that Nissy can do just more than vocals.

“Rebellious” by May J.

I’m so happy to hear new music from May J. and “Rebellious” is exactly what I needed. It’s a bit more of a chill track as it has a mixture of pop and R&B. The lyrics sold me immediately as they are so good and really hit home. The composition seems a little off at times but I think it fits with the track very well and May J. does a great job of fitting her vocals to the composition. This track shows off May J.’s vocals but does keep it light, however, I believe given the lyrics it matches very well.

“checkmate” by milet

I was very surprised upon hearing “checkmate” as it shows a different side of milet that we don’t normally see, a more upbeat track. I love the composition and milet shows that her voice can do these types of tracks. “checkmate” still has your milet flare and her unique vocals always add that special touch. I also love that milet showcases her range and power as well. “checkmate” give you this fun feel and carries a touch of the jazz as well.

“TARINAI (Matsuwa Remix)” by MIYACHI

With the release of the music video for “TARINAI (Matsuwa Remix)” releasing, I went back and revisited MIYACHI’s GOOD NIGHT TOKYO EP that released back in January of this year. This track is fantastic, MIYACHI’s rap is phenomenal with the perfect balance of cadence, flow, and composition. “TARINAI (Matsuwa Remix")” does have a Western flavor but you can hear the Eastern influence in the composition. MIYACHI’s combination of Western and Eastern styles flow so well and “TARINAI (Matsuwa Remix)” showcases that with the rap being Western and the composition being Eastern.

“Kimi wa Tomodachi” by JASMINE

“Kimi wa Tomodachi” surprised me as I was not expecting it to be such a chill track with heavy jazz and blues influence. The composition is magnificent and JASMINE’s voice matches with this style so well due to her soulful voice. I’ve had this track on repeat since I first heard it and with the impending release of the music video, I keep going back to it. The piano in here is the perfect touch to “Kimi wa TomodachI” and makes you feel that you are at a music bar session. “Kimi wa Tomodachi” is such a well rounded track due to composition, vocals, and the lyrics and JASMINE pulls it all off flawlessly.
