WARPs UP Announces New Song, with Mind-Bending Video by Rising Director Kenichiro Shimizu and REALROCKDESIGN!

image1-8.jpg

Four-member Japanese and Chinese male dance group WARPs UP, have announced their latest song, “Hali Gali”,  which will be published on YouTube and as a limited release in China. The music video is directed by filmmaker Kenichiro Shimizu (PELE) and Tokyo-based creative group REALROCKDESIGN, which also produces large-scale outdoor festivals and sensory entertainment show STAR ISLAND. Shimizu, working with Daito Manabe (Rhizomatiks), was the videographer and editorial director on British artist Squarepusher’s “Terminal Slam” video. His works have garnered acclaim for their innovation and creativity, with “Terminal Slam” receiving the Computer Animation Category Honor Award at Austria’s Ars Electronica Award 2020.

As a video for WARPs UP, the “Hali Gali” promo is itself warped, bending spaces and presenting a mesmerizing, unusual dance routine. At first glance, the CG blend of cutting-edge motion capture and filmed backgrounds could fool you into thinking it is a regular live-action scene, but as the video progresses, the visual production and camerawork become ever more incongruous and overwhelmingly weird.

FEMM and Duke of Harajuku Shows off their Summer Dream in the Fall with Latest Music Video!

A new music video has been released for “Summer Dream feat. FEMM (S+ Ver.)”, a collaboration between Japanese mannequin rap duo FEMM and Duke of Harajuku, a member of music label tokyovitamin based in Tokyo. Duke of Harajuku’s latest album RAZZLE DAZZLE features such collaborators as Billboard charting trackmaker Star Boy and Kanye West/Wiz Khalifa conspirator Gab3, along with Japanese rappers FEMM, PETZ and Young Coco as featured artists. As a girls’ anthem with a darkly humorous message, mannequin rap duo FEMM’s acclaimed song “Fxxk Boyz Get Money” found an audience with teens and influencers in the United States, quickly spreading around Europe, South America, and Asia. FEMM’s debut album Femm-Isation brought Japanese female rap to a whole new audience, reaching the Top 10 of Billboard’s World Albums chart in the US.

As previously reported on November 6, close friends FEMM and Duke of Harajuku released the collaboration single “Level Up” / “Summer Dream”. For the double A-side release, Duke of Harajuku appeared on FEMM’s new track “Level Up”, while FEMM reciprocated with a turn on a recut version of Duke of Harajuku’s “Summer Dream feat. FEMM (S+ Ver.)”, the original version of which is on ‘RAZZLE DAZZLE’.

Both music videos of “Level Up”, and “Summer Dream” combine to make up one complete package: The shots in the “Level Up” video where Duke of Harajuku is filming candid footage of FEMM with a camcorder and the scene where his lip-syncing does not match the lyrics (because he is in fact singing “Summer Dream”) is designed to match up with the new “Summer Dream” video so that the two promos complement each other. Both music videos were directed by filmmaker Yuki Tsujimoto, with footage shot over several days in rundown areas of the Tokyo suburbs to create a mysterious ‘Oriental’ vibe.
