FEMM Return to be Found with Upcoming Album!

As a girls’ anthem with a darkly humorous message, mannequin rap duo FEMM’s acclaimed song ‘Fxxk Boyz Get Money’ found an audience with teens and influencers in the United States, quickly spreading around Europe, South America and Asia. Before long, FEMM fans – known as “agents” – were everywhere around the world. FEMM’s debut album ‘Femm-Isation’ brought Japanese female rap to a whole new audience, reaching the Top 10 of Billboard’s World Albums chart in the US. Recently it was announced that the previously stiff FEMM1.0 mannequin units had received a firmware update to FEMM2.0, allowing them to achieve convincingly humanlike levels of emotional expression. And then today, November 6, the newly upgraded FEMM released double A-side single ‘Level Up’ / ‘Summer Dream’ (FEMM + Duke of Harajuku) in partnership with rising independent label and longtime FEMM cohorts tokyovitamin.

In addition, the music video for ‘Level Up feat. Duke of Harajuku’, which marks the beginning of Chapter 2 in FEMM’s story, was also released. The video is a remarkable work of cyberpunk visual worldbuilding, showing FEMM undergoing the firmware update to version 2.0 in a world with polluted air, the overly vivid colors on screen feeding a growing sense of anxiety. The video was directed by Yuki Tsujimoto, whose work is known for its eye-catching use of color and edgy editing. The styling was handled by the members of FEMM themselves. Additionally, on November 20, “Level Up feat. Duke of Harajuku” will be included on a brand-new six-song EP titled 404 Not Found. The title will be familiar to fans who encountered the error message displayed on FEMM’s official website these past few weeks, which caused FEMM agents to worry about the duo’s future. In fact it was a teaser for the new EP.

The members of FEMM say that they chose the title 404 Not Found to suggest “brand-new music that doesn’t exist (yet), no matter how hard you search for it”. The EP offers radical rap styles over fierce industrial tracks, pulling in elements of ‘dark pop’, a style that combines musicality and message and is now sweeping the world’s music scene. Rather than simply riding this trend, FEMM draw elements into their own sound to offer a whole new musical experience and a rich seam of emotion. 404 Not Found includes production by DaBaby and Lil Uzi Vert collaborator Star Boy, as well as female Japanese trackmakers ANJULIECAT a.k.a. YUA and Diana Chiaki, who were approached directly by the members of FEMM as fans of their work. Other talented producers on the EP include Danny L Harle, a key member of London-based next-generation label PC Music who has produced for the likes of Charli XCX; Japanese bass music scene players HABANERO POSSE; Japanese hip-hop linchpin KM; and Radical Hardcore Clique, pioneers of the Japalanta genre that blends traditional Japanese music and trap. The cover art was designed by London-based illustrator Max Prentis. It depicts a lonely AI character that wanders the internet in the distant future, long after the extinction of humankind, and continues to attempt to access websites that will never be updated, displaying only the error message “404 Not Found”.

Unfortunately there are no pre-order links for the album at the time of reporting however be sure to check out the music video for “Level Up feat. Duke of Harajuku” below along with the digital single here!

BUCK-TICK Brings their Magic Abroad!

Japanese rock royalty,BUCK-TICK, have revealed the exclusive CD cover art and bonus track titles included in the international edition of latest album ABRACADABRA. This will be the first international release for the legendary band outside of Asia in its 33-year career, and will be available from November 20 via London’s JPU Records as a limited edition tape cassette and CD with an exclusive cover that features the band’s members. It's also available to download / stream now. Both versions of ABRACADABRA will include four bonus tracks; the single versions of tracks “Moon Sayonara wo Oshiete'”, “Kemonotachi no Yoru”, “Datenshi” and “Kogoeru”, the first time these have been available in a physical format outside of Japan. Both versions also boast English lyric translations and Romaji transliterations inside the packaging

Speaking of the new album, BUCK-TICK's guitarist and main composer Hisashi Imai comments, "It's alternative electro. That's the image I had when I began writing for the album". One thing Imai was not expecting to have an effect on the album was a global pandemic, which plunged Tokyo into a State of Emergency midway through recording ABRACADABRA. This led to the creation of a new song, “Eureka”. "Coronavirus interrupted the recording of this album for around a month," continues Imai. "During this time, I was composing music by myself at home. When I strummed the A chord to F#m on my guitar, tears began to well up. I kept going with that feeling and 'Eureka' was made."

Imai also found some positivity in the limitations put in place to prevent the spread of the virus. His band recently conducted their first livestream, streaming a live, full production performance to the world. "Coronavirus has made it difficult to hold concerts in Japan, much like the rest of the world. So, I think these kinds of performances that are broadcast live across the internet will increase, it’s something overseas listeners can partake in and experience us in a way they may not have been able to before."

LOVEBITES' New Song to Feature in Upcoming Series VLADLOVE from Anime Masterminds Mamoru Oshii and Junji Nishimura

Popular heavy metal band LOVEBITES have today announced that a new song entitled “Winds Of Transylvania” will be their first to feature in anime. The Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards winning band will be in charge of the opening theme song for VLADLOVE, a new series from highly acclaimed, visionary directors Mamoru Oshii and Junji Nishimura.

VLADLOVE is a new, original work from Mamori Oshii, the world-famous animation director behind Ghost in the Shell and Patlabor, and Junji Nishimura of Ranma 1/2 and You’re Under Arrest fame. The pair created a huge impression on Japanese pop culture when they worked on the iconic anime Urusei Yatsura together in the 1980s, leaving fans to anticipate their return for the decades that followed. This new project sees the directors return to work on a comedy series filled with interesting and unique characters, centering around a blood donation enthusiast and a vampire from a prestigious bloodline.

LOVEBITES were chosen by the anime's production team who were seeking a band that could capture the concept and fierce vampiric nature of the series' main character, Mai Vlad Transilvania. Vocalist Asami committed on the honor "We look forward to delivering a heavy and dynamic song for VLADLOVE! We have been appointed as official ambassadors for the series, so we will continue to support VLADLOVE as much as possible! I hope you will join us in our excitement for this series!"

Currently there is no news of a release for “Winds of Transylvina” at the time of reporting. in the mean time check out the preview of VLADLOVE below!
